Show And Tell

Show and Tell

It's Show and Tell Friday! Kelli at There Is No Place Like Home is our lovely hostess, so if you have something you would like to share, please visit Kelli's blog.

My Show and Tell for this week are these two vintage Girl Scout Handbooks I found in an antique emporium. I'm still perusing through them, there is so much information in these books on just about everything. Homemaking, nature, etiquette, and first aid to name just a few. I really need to read these handbooks!

This first one was printed in 1951 and is a hardcover. It's also rather small-about 5x7 inches:

This next one is a softcover and was printed in 1966. I once owned the same handbook, but it was probably passed on to my younger sisters:

Here are some pages from the 1966 handbook. I wonder if Kelli once earned this hostess merit badge?

And every former Girl Scout probably remembers The Girl Scout Promise:

On my honor, I will try
To do my duty to God and my country,
To help other people at all times,
To obey the Girl Scout laws.

The second uniform from the left was my favorite.

I loved everything about scouting: the camping, the community service, and of course THE COOKIES! I was thrilled to find thse two handbooks.

Thank you for looking at my Show and Tell, and thank you Kelli, for hosting.

Show and Tell Saturday Friday

Show and Tell

Whoops!!! Looks like I'm a little late for this week's (or SUPER early for next week's) Show and Tell Friday. Kelli from There Is No Place Like Home is our lovely hostess, so if you would like to join us, please visit her blog.

My Show and Tell for this week is my 50 state quarter collection. (I'm guessing most of you have a collection of these also.)

I know this photo is quite distorted, but if you look closely, you'll notice it's almost complete-only five more spots to fill! The time has sure gone by quickly. I think my favorite one so far is Kentucky. Or that cute one with the cow from Wisconsin. Anyway, I'm looking forward to completing this collection in the coming year.

Thank you for looking at my show and tell and thank you, Kelli for hosting.

Show And Tell

Kelli at There is No Place Like Home is the hostess of Show And Tell Friday. If you would like to join the fun and check out other great show and tells, please visit Kelli's blog.

My show and tell this week is my Nativity. It once belonged to my Grandmother, then my Mother, and it was passed on to me when I moved into my own apartment. I'm not sure how old it is, but I know it's over 50 years old. It's a bit chipped and worn because many little hands (and paws) have played with it through the years. My Mother always displayed it beneath our Christmas tree along with our gifts. I also do the same for He is the most special gift anyone can receive.

And here is our tree. These lights twinkle, so the photo looks a little blurry. Notice that black silhouette in the bottom left near the center? Yes, that's our kitty-he is so fascinated with that tree!

Thank you for stopping by and looking at my Show and Tell, and thank you Kelli, for hosting.

Show and Tell

I know I "show and telled" this Autumn Fire sedum in September, but I wanted to show you what it looks like now in its fall finery. The blooms have gradually darkened to a deep burgundy, eventually they will turn brown. The flash did go off when I took the picture, so the color looks a bit washed out.

Here's a close-up:

And this is how it looked in September:

I am a bit late for Show and Tell this week and wouldn't you know it-I decided to show some of my clocks. We are "falling back" this weekend so I thought I would show a little bit of my collection.

This chef clock hangs in my kitchen. I like kitschy kitchen things, especially clocks.

This teapot clock also hangs in my kitchen:

And this carved wooden clock hangs in the dining room:

I also have several more and let's just say I will be busy on Sunday turning all these clocks back! The kitty clock on my blog has changed by itself already so that's one less to worry about!

(It's kind of strange how I love to collect clocks and I'm rarely on time for anything!)

Show And Tell

Kelli at There is No Place Like Home is hosting Show and Tell Friday. If you have something you would like to show, please visit Kelli's blog and leave a link to your post.

My show and tell this Friday are these two pumpkins I painted. I recently found a book with lots of vintage Halloween images and I thought some of them would look cute on pumpkins. When I was younger, my Dad would take us pumpkin picking and then we would bring our pumpkins home and paint them. It's been a long, long time since I've done that. In fact usually my pumpkins get eaten by squirrels, so I think these faces may be scaring them away!

This friendly guy sits on the porch next to the front door:

And this Halloween kitty sits on the other side of the door:

I may paint a few more this weekend if I do some more pumpkin picking.

My Show and Tell for this Friday are these two vintage American Cookery magazines my father gave to me. He knows I like vintage kitchen items, so when he goes garage "sailing" he's always on the lookout for goodies for me.

This one is from May 1926:

And this one is from October 1932:

Each magazine has recipes, homemaking tips, articles, and lots of great old time ads like these:

Here's a sample menu from the October issue on what to serve on "Witches' Night":

Moosemeat or venison steaks, or roast duck
Prune and apple puree with candied carrot rings
Grilled sliced oranges
Wild rice balls
Witches' hash
Barberry Jelly
Hazel nut and cinnamon buns
Witches'salad
Witches' brew
Doughnuts and cider

Dinner starts at eight-don't be late! You don't want to eat cold moosemeat!

Show and Tell Friday

My Show and Tell for this Friday are these pieces of vintage costume jewelry:

The two necklaces were given to my father years ago by an elderly neighbor of his for repairing her furnace. He really didn't want to take them, but she insisted. He then gave them to me. I really don't know much about them, but I think they may be from the 1920's.

The enameled pin in the middle of the necklace with the blue stones is something that I picked up at an antique flea market in London many years ago. I confess that I really don't know much about that piece either, but I liked it because of all the colors. And it looks like my flash landed dead center in it! One day I'm going to learn to take better pictures!

Thank you for looking at my Show and and thank you Kelli for hosting.

P.S.-Have a great vacation!

Show and Tell

Yay-it's finally Friday and that means it's time for Show and Tell. If you would like to join the fun, please visit Kelli's blog and leave a link to your post.

My show and tell for this week are these visitors to our butterfly bush. These are monarch butterflies and I've been getting dozens of these pretty winged creatures lately. They migrate to Mexico in the fall and since I live in NJ they still have quite a distance to go. I'm glad they are stopping by here along their journey for a snack:

They must be really hungry because they don't seem to mind having their picture taken:

Looks like I have some serious pruning to do on that butterfly bush!
There's still some action going on in my flower garden. This Autumn Fire sedum has just begun to bloom:

Show and Tell

My show and tell for this week is this carved wooden cross. My father found this years ago at a yard sale and bought it for my mother and she eventually passed it on to me. It really does have a lot of nice details-you can probably see them better by clicking on the photo. It did come out a little too dark.
I have no idea how old this is. It has the initials ES on the back and that's it. It's about a foot long and 9 inches wide and it hangs above the door in our master bedroom.

I really need to learn how to take better indoor pictures!

I present to you all my Show and Tell for this Friday:

No, this is NOT an artifact from some ancient burial site. It is a self portrait head sculpture I made in one of my college art classes. Judging by that hairdo I'm guessing I made this sometime during the late 70's or early 80's. Looks like I never did get around to finishing the mouth. I remember after the class completed this assignment, the teacher turned off the lights in the room and we sketched our self portraits by candlelight. And I must admit, my head definitely looked better in that dim lighting!
I kind of have that same blank stare on my face right now as I have spent a lot of time online today unsuccessfully trying to get tickets to Oprah's NYC show. So I guess "my head" and I will be watching that episode from the comfort of our living room.

Show And Tell

My show and tell for this week are these Roly Poly tobacco tins. They are reproductions, I bought them years ago while vacationing in Cape May, NJ. I'm not a smoker, but I thought they were cute. The originals are hard to find and are usually pretty expensive. You can read a little bit more about their history by clicking here.

This distinguished looking gentleman is called the "businessman":

There's a tobacco ad on his back:

This smiling dude is the "cowboy":

And I think everyone knows who this jolly fellow is:

I only have these three but I'm always on the lookout for others. My cat would make an excellent model for one of these tins!

Thank you for looking ay my "Show and Tell" and thank you Kelli for hosting.

Show and Tell

It's Show and Tell Friday! Part of my show and tell is I finally was able to copy this graphic from Kelli's blog-and I have no idea how I did it-I'm such a tech wiz!
If you would like to join in the fun and see other great show and tells, please visit Kelli's blog.

My show and tell for this Friday are these antique earrings. They once belonged to my great-grandmother from Italy. They were passed on to my grandmother and then to me. It is a tradition in my family for the bride to wear these earrings on her wedding day. I plan on giving them to my oldest niece when she marries, as I have no children.

I believe these earrings are about 100 years old and made of platinum. There are two diamonds in each earring. They have some pretty little details, it's hard to tell in this photo. I think you can click on the picture to get a better look.

Thank you for looking at my "Show and Tell" and thank you Kelli for hosting.

My show and tell for this week is the gazebo in our backyard. As you can see, my dog Raven enjoys using it also:

It's nice and shady under here-just ask my hubby. This is where he spent yesterday afternoon when he locked himself outside. We did get a larger table and some placemats with palm trees on them:

There are shelves for plants and I also hung windchimes in each corner:

It's also a good place to ripen tomatoes:

And this tropical hibiscus bloomed just in time for "Show and Tell Friday" so I had to take a photo:

Show And Tell

Kelli is hosting a Show and Tell Friday. If you would like to join the fun, please visit Kelli's blog and leave a link to your post.

My show and tell for this Friday are these photos of some of the pretty winged visitors to my butterfly bush.

This first one is of a red admiral butterfly. These are probably my most frequent guests. Sometimes one will actually land on me for a few seconds.

This painted lady wouldn't let me get too close. Her wings are so pretty when open, but she was a bit camera shy.

A pretty tiger swallowtail stopped by for a visit:

And this majestic monarch kept teasing me by landing close by and then taking off as soon as I would try to take his picture. Don't you just love his spots?

I love sitting on the front porch in the summertime and watching what stops by. I'm still waiting on my favorite black eastern swallowtails to pay me a visit.

Thank you for looking at my show and tell and thank you Kelli for hosting.
